On June 8, 2021 the North Carolina Building Code Council convened and voted to extend the July 1, 2021 deadline previously approved to October 1, 2021.  Valet trash vendors were granted a six-month extension as a result of manufacturing delays caused by COVID-19. All valet trash containers must meet the updated requirements in the 2018 Fire Code Section 304.4 by October 1, 2021.

Simultaneously, SB:465 passed the Senate and is making its way through the House. This bill would supersede the BCC code change if passed. This bill would also shift code enforcement from the BCC to current local jurisdictions over apartment occupancies and require they permit trash containers that stand upright and meet minimum standards. The bill is currently sitting in the House Rules Committee.
