President Biden has signed H. R. 3684, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also referred to as a “Hard” Infrastructure Bill. The bill will fund billions in the roads, bridges, rail, broadband and water supply over a six-year period. It passed the U.S. House on November 5, 2021 by a vote of 228-206.
For North Carolina, this means $7.2 billion for highway programs and another $457 million for bridge replacement and repairs. More specifically:
- $911 million to improve public transportation, including rail.
- $109 million to expand the electric vehicle charging network.
- $100 million to spread broadband coverage to at least 424K North Carolinians without it.
- $105 billion towards improving the communities’ ability to withstand extreme weather caused by climate change.
