Charlotte City Council Updates

City Council Terms
Voted on Feb. 13 to move forward with extending the duration of council member terms from two years to
four years. Terms would be staggered, and an eighth district seat would be added to the council, bringing
the total number of seats to twelve. There will be a public hearing on the issue on March 13, and there’s a
possibility the proposal will be on the ballot in the fall. If voters approve, it will go into effect in 2025.

City Plans to Lobby State Legislators on Sales Tax
Voted to approve a state legislative agenda that includes pursuing a referendum to create a permanent
source of revenue for regional and local transportation systems including roadway, bicycle, pedestrian,
greenway. Legislators in Raleigh would need to sign off. The vote was along party lines, with Democrats in
favor and Republicans opposed.
